Bet You Know The Names Of At least Two Governors Now.

December 11, 2008

Avoiding politics on this blog has been my modus operandi, until this recent Illinois debacle.

Before moving to Washington, Illinois was my adopted state for a couple of years after living in Wisconsin for a great deal of my life. I couldn’t quite call Illinois my home and with Wisconsin right “next door,” it was easy to keep crossing the border back to the state that did feel like home. However after Barack Obama’s amazing victory, I became (semi) proud of Illinois. Call me a fair weather friend if you like, because that pride now appears to have been obliterated due to Governor Rod Blagojevich’s surreal “exposé.”

Arrest another chapter in corrupt Ill. history

By DON BABWIN, Associated Press Writer

CHICAGO – Federal prosecutors’ stunning allegations of corruption by Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Tuesday once again reminded the nation of Illinois‘ shameful history of crooked governors.

George RyanDan WalkerOtto Kerner. All have served as Illinois governor since the late 1960s, and all later served time in federal prison.

“I can tell you one thing,” Chicago FBI Chief Robert Grant said. “If it isn’t the most corrupt state in the United States, it’s certainly one hell of a competitor.”

Blagojevich’s arrest Tuesday “reinforces the notion that Illinois is one of the most corrupt states in the nation,” said Charles Wheeler, head of the Public Affairs Reporting program at the University of Illinois at Springfield

Blagojevich, a Democrat, was elected in 2002 as a reformer promising to clean up after Ryan, a Republican who sits in a federal prison after his 2006 conviction for steering state contacts and leases to political cronies.

Clean up sounds about right. Oh give me a break, what was this guy thinking.

From The Huffington Post:

The current bid is a mere $0.99 cents. And the end time for the bid is December 19, 2008.
