Neither Snow Nor Rain, Nor Heat, Nor Gloom Of Night, Nor Saturdays ………?

Tighten your belts please.

Thank you. Unfortunately I’m afraid that’s not enough. So take a deeper breath and cinch a little bit more. Feeling uncomfortable? Good. Hard to breathe? Great. Now we’re all feeling it.

Although it’s not the mail carrier’s motto (it is inscribed on some post office walls around the country), we have come to associate the reliability of mail delivery with the familiar, “Neither snow nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,” except now there’s talk of cutting back one of the delivery days. I understand the need for cut backs, and like I mentioned above, we all have to do our “bit,” so do you think we could perhaps bring back the Pony Express to help us out? At least on Saturdays.

Don’t get me wrong, I do understand the need for the Post Office to save money, and we are using their services less and less – what with UPS, FedEx and DHL picking up the slack (and the packages), and our expanding email usage muscling in on “snail mail,” so it’s painfully clear that something must be done. But it’ll take away an “event” that’s become a mainstay in our daily lives. What’s the barking dog going to do on Saturdays?

What else will have to disappear?

More of our bills will have to be received and paid on-line; there’ll be fewer surprise packages showing up at the front door; fewer chats with the mail carrier about the neighbors and those juicy bits of neighborhood “gossip” (which for some folk it might be their only connection with another human all day).  But if the Pony Express returns for one day a week, what fun Saturdays could be. A lot more fun that just the mail truck pulling up outside your house. This would really give the dog something to bark about.

So keep a bunch of carrots handy (for the horse). Just in case.

I’d wouldn’t mind seeing a cute guy on a horse ride up to my house on Saturdays!
